SoilTech Research In the News: Faisal Hossain’s Smart Irrigation Project

The University of Washington’s Civil and Environmental Engineering Department recently featured an article about Professor Faisal Hossain’s 2023-24 SoilTech project performed in collaboration with UW Facilities, Onset Environmental, and the UW College of Engineering’s Industry Capstone program. The researchers worked with Onset Environmental and UW Facilities to strategically install sensors to collect hyper-local data about soil moisture and air temperature. The Capstone program students integrated sensor data with satellite data to create a dashboard that can be used by the UW facilities team to manage irrigation at selected locations on the UW campus. The project is currently in its pilot phase, with a goal of expanding throughout the UW campus and beyond. The team is hopeful that this project will make campus water use as efficient as possible, and that this system can provide a blueprint for better water management everywhere.
